Coming Across Something I’ve Never Seen Before

December was a miserable month weather-wise in Da Nang Vietnam. I think the sun came out twice, once was on the 30th and I took that chance to head to a local beach to see if there is anything in the area to capture.

At first everything seemed pretty quiet with only a few sections of locals on the beach. So I just had a nice walk around for a while.

I then turned around and there was a group of local fishermen down the beach gathering so I knew I had to head back that way and have a look at what they were doing.

The group was organizing a giant fishing net and then went and spread it out about 100-200 metres into the water.

About 8 people then gathered to slowly pull the net in to the shore. This is something I had never seen before, this kind of cooperation and teamwork. I had seen some small nets being spread out like this at other spots but never witnessed such a large group coming together for it.

The world has a trash problem. It is so disappointing to be at these absolutely beautiful places and seeing all the trash sitting around. I am not blaming these men at all, there was no way they were the cause of the problem in this area but the problem is everywhere.

Even in their netting pulled in from the water, it was catching and bringing in trash. What from afar appears to be such a beautiful pristine place is anything but pristine when you get up close.

When the net was pulled in the catch didn’t seem a lot for the effort. Maybe it was normal I have no idea what the normal catch amount should be for this time of day and this location.

Tips for Visiting Local Beaches in Da Nang:

Transport: Most local beaches are easiest to access by motorbike or taxi. Public transport options are limited.

Time Your Visit: Mornings and late afternoons are best for avoiding the heat and experiencing local life.

Stay Safe: These are not areas where with lifeguards or where a lot of people go to swim. There can be riptides, huge waves and very quiet with no one to help if you are in the water and get into trouble.

Down the beach a bit further there was another small team finishing up the same process and putting their nets away.

This was a nice little morning walk. I loved being able to witness something I had never seen before.
